Ramayana Ballet Purawisata Yogyakarta . Saw the Ramayana at Purawisata, had the dinner + ballet combo. Pickup from the hotel was arranged by Purawisata staff (nice bonus) and dinner was buffet style – a decent selection of Indonesian food served from 630pm till 8pm.
The ballet was beautifully performed. First of all, the stage was cleverly designed to allow the actors to enter from several different areas, with the gamelan players on stage right. Lighting was utilised very cleverly throughout the performance, the narrator/singer sang soulfully in javanese (thankfully we were provided with a summary of the story beforehand and could understand the ballet being performed)
Dancers did a great job of conveying the story of Sinta’s abduction by Rahwana, however got a bit worried by the little children (some as young as 2-4 yrs old) playing the parts of the monkeys – they were climbing the walls and walking around on the fences and roofs, we were scared that they’d fall off!
