Ramayana Ballet One of the best performances of a traditional Hindu epic – Was visiting Yogyakarta and was told that the Ramayana Ballet was not to be missed. Wanted to see the one at Prambanan open air theater but it was closed due to the weather. The hotel arranged for this one instead. Am glad that I went for this one.
The ballet tells the story of the ancient Hindu Epic Ramayana in a traditional Javanese style. The cast is dressed in beautiful costumes and the performance is impressive. It is more of a dance than a theater. Movements are exaggerated and the cast wears extensive makeups and masks.
In front of the stage is a traditional Javanese orchestra with musicians playing local tunes and singers recounting the ancient tale in the local language.
If you want a slice of Javanese culture, this is definitely not to be missed.
