Borobudur Temple and the surroundings, are understandably commercialized. Many locals trying to make a living from this historic structure on their doorstep, but there isn’t really much of any value on offer, except for the guides.
Being about 1 hour drive outside of Yogyakarta, this is the only destination at this place. It is worth paying a guide to tell you about the history and significance of everything that you see. It is worth taking time at every step.
Because there is very little else to do in this area, I would not recommend staying near there, or if you do, only for 1 night. We booked 3 nights there, so spent a lot of time on the road between there and Jogja, where there are many more interesting places to go.
