Borobudur Special Sunrise – We booked the sunrise tour and it was really lovely. We arrived in the dark and found a spot sitting on the edge of the upper tier of the temple, facing east. The sun teased us, first the Orange and pink in the clouds, then the morning mist rising and obscuring all, then the sun at last burning off the mist and welcoming us to the temple. Expect a lot of people and know that despite this you can find an hour of tranquillity amidst the stupas. Try to find a spot where you can see Mt Merapi and its finger of smoke as well as the sun and distant hills.
We stayed for a while then tan for a quick breakfast of bans fritter and then we came back for round 2 to slowly walk up the levels and admire the carvings and scale. A great morning!
There are lots of small cafes in the tourist village as you leave the Pek, so we had a second breakfast there before heading back to Yogyakarta.
