Gedongsongo temple is the temple complex of Hindu religious heritage which is located at the foot of mount Ungaran with an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level and is located in the village temple, Ambarawa district – Central Java.
There are 9 temples that are all overall made from adesit stone. In the first enshrinement complex seven temples, and called Gedong Pitoe, because when the temple was discovered by Raffles, there are only seven temples only. In the end, the two temples were discovered again that the temple was named Candi Gedongsongo.
Of the nine temples in the complex are Gedongsongo there is only one temple which is located in a state-maintained, while other temples in disrepair. The five temples are called Gedong I through V that has been renovated by the Archaeological Institute of the Netherlands. Gedong I and II renovated in 1928-1931, and Gedong III, IV, V were renovated in 1977-1983.
As to when the temple was built Gedongsongo no official statement, but in view of the style of the temple is that the temple was built approximately in the early 9th century. The form of the temple is very similar to the Dieng temple complex in the town of Wonosobo.
